Preface of PM&R Board Review

Medical students, residents, and professional physiatrists will benefit from Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review pdf, Fourth Edition. The book focuses on concepts pertinent to the board exam in Rehabilitation Medicine. Over 500 diagrams clarify the board-related subject. Essential concepts are explained and reinforced by illustration in this way.

Residents will find the book helpful in preparing for Parts I and II of the PM&R Board Certification because it is one of the only books of its kind with a significant focus on board-related material that provides a synopsis of up-to-date PM&R orthopedic, neurologic, and general medical information all in one place. The key texts in this specialty have been cited for giving the board examinee the most up-to-date and relevant news and suggested reading.

The fourth edition differs from earlier editions in that the following chapters and subsections have been expanded: Chapter 3, Rheumatology, and the Cancer and Ultrasound subsections. Furthermore, the writers have updated all pertinent epidemiology, therapies, and drugs throughout the text. This fourth version has been colored to lend definition and organization to the reader. This book is distinct from most others. It is written in outline format and is approximately one-third the size of most textbooks.

The topics are organized into crucial specialty areas and are written by physicians who have unique interests and clinical skills in the field. Throughout the narrative, board pearls are marked with an open-book icon. The purpose of these pearls is to emphasize the clinical and board-eligible components of the issues. This structure was inspired by the Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine Board Review and was utilized to help with last-minute board preparation.

The contents are based on the topic selection of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR) Self-Assessment Examination for Residents (SAE-R) Content Outline (which is utilized by residents across the country to prepare for the SAE). This was done primarily to assist all residents, Post Graduate Years 2, 3, and 4, with yearly xiv preparation and carryover from SAE to board exam preparation. Before using this material, two critical points must be addressed.

This is not a comprehensive PM&R textbook. All chapters are written with the idea that readers will have thoroughly studied one or more of the primary PM&R textbooks before studying this review.

Pros & Cons

Some chapters are not in-depth enough (cardio and pneumo), and others are treated too schematically (prostheses). It does not contain all the classifications required of the European Board.

It needs a good foundation from the fellow candidate to be used, but it remains a good book. For use with an anatomy and neuroanatomy atlas. More agile than DeLisa’s but perhaps less complete than Braddom.
